Here’s another book for stragglers. Every family has one and this might serve as a cautionary tale.

Daisy and her mum are on their way back home. Mama Duck constantly cautions Daisy to stay close but she seems distracted by the frogs, the dragonflies and is soon engrossed in bouncing across lily pads. In all that splosh and splash, Daisy doesn’t realize that her mum’s far away and she’s all by herself. The frogs and the dragonflies have vanished too...

Of course, the story ends well, but, a lesson's learned as well.

This book reminded me a lot of Harvey the Baker in that it introduces children to the delights of baking.

The story takes us through the baking (and cleaning!) routine as Jacob bakes a pie for his parents’ anniversary. He’s also a fan of Chef Monty, who hosts Jacob’s favorite television show.

Chef Monty’s culinary wisdom peeks through the pages every step of the baking process. Sample this: A happy baker bakes a happy pie.

Naturally, who would contradict such delightful insights?

This is the first time, I've seen a sloth (that too the pre-historic kind!) as the central figure in a children’s book. Naturally, the slow pace of the animal is used to create some hilarious situations.

Meet Sherman the sloth who has spent all his life eating and sleeping around the family tree. When he meets Alice, another sloth who goes to Mr. Mammoth’s school, Sherman wants to join too. He wants to learn to think, too. :-)

Except that it takes more than a day to get there and his parents aren't too keen on his new idea, either.

It is also the story of a child overcoming his fears and taking the plunge. :-)

This exceptional picture book reminds me of the several “I love you” books that articulate a parent’s love for their child(ren). While the others use simple words and are apt for very young readers, Give her the River – A father’s wish for his daughter (Yes! That’s what the cover says) is a poetic expression of a father’s desires for his little one. It uses the analogy of a river to explore the beauty of the world. It’s a poignant rendition of love - that special love that only parents can feel.

I loved this book, because it captures the essence of happiness by teaching a child to appreciate the world around her. That will stand her in good stead for life!

The words are tender and the beautiful paintings, elevate the book to a whole new level.
