Meet the Jungle Kids – Todd, the scientist, Jamie, the smallest and Georgina, the bossy one. They have a ‘jungle hideout’ and something’s been dipping into their stash of chocolates. They hatch an elaborate plan to find the culprit and instead, end up with a furry friend.

The narrative is endearing with several additions to the story that pop in through the illustrations.

Flea, where are you?

children's books, flap book, colors, toddlers, educational, fun readingAuthor: Karen Foster

Illustrator: Jan Smith

For Ages: 2 and above

No. of Pages: 10

Publisher: Marshall Direct Learning, London

A lovely lift-a-flap book featuring Hoot the resolute little owl and his friend, Flea.

After we’d finished reading through the book, we realized that each page was devoted to a color!

This story cleverly invokes a search which requires your little one to participate in. In effect, your child becomes a part of the story. Our baby helped Hoot look for his friend under a black hat, a purple lily pad, a red flower, a yellow rock, a green tree and a blue cave.

This is one of those books your toddler will love to read every night. All the best!

Excerpt

Flea, Flea, is that you behind the yellow rock?

“No, it’s me”, ROARED Wily.

Flea, Flea, is that you in the green tree?

“No, it’s me,” chuckled Rangatang.

Flea, Flea, is that you inside the blue cave?

“No, it’s me,” whispered Batwing.

I Love the Rain

Year: 2005

Publisher: Chronicle Books, USA

Age: 4 and above

No. of Pages: 26

ISBN: 978 1 58717 208 3

Read this book and you’ll remember everything that is beautiful and exciting about rain. :-)

I loved it for the highly imaginative narrative and the joie-de-vivre that shines through Molly and Sophie. As they get home from school on a rainy day, they imagine all sorts of happy images for all that a rain means – the drops, the wet street, the puddles.

Of course, my kids wanted to jump into the very next rain that came along. It’s the book. Its happiness is infectious.

Excerpt

“What’s that sound on the roof?” asks Sophie.

“Tap dancers!” I jump in. “A whole chorus line on stage above us.”

We tap our toes all the way to our stop.

No. of Pages: 32

The book's cover does call her ‘The girl in a whirl who can’t stay still!’. And, that does help explain all the zip-zap-zoom in the book.

Bridget Fidget wants a pet. So when a smaller-than-expected package arrives at home, Bridget decides to settle for a penguin instead of a unicorn. Underneath all the packaging material is a smaller box. So it’s just the right size for a mouse which she thinks ought to make a great pet.

Her great dreams come crashing down when her dad opens the box. Or is there still hope? :-)

Excerpt

This box wouldn't open.

Bridget sniffed it. It didn't smell.

This is a tender story of a parent’s love for his little one, captured elegantly in sensitive prose and poignant illustrations.

It’s a beautiful day in the woodland. Littletail and her dad, Longtail are playing all her favorite little games.  As they play, Longtail realizes that soon things will not be the same. His little one will grow up and be faster and cleverer than him. Yet, one thing will not change - his love for Littletail is forever.

Excerpt

It was getting late, but Littletail wanted to play one last game.

“Follow the leader!” she said.

Longtail was small – but Littletail was smaller. And she could squeeze through where Longtail could
not.

“I always get through,” said Littletail proudly.

“Do you always?” laughed Longtail, “Well it won’t be forever, one day you will be just as big as me!”

Ducks are loved universally and I'm pretty sure Disney played a part in it too. :-)

This nature book on ducklings traces the journey of a duck from an egg to when it is eight weeks old. By this time, their wings are fully grown and they are finally ready for flight.

Several close-up photographs and fun-fact boxes make this book a delightful and educational read.
